Thrifting has gotten a lot of hype over the past year. For what reason, I do not know. Thrifting has been around for ages and is just as amazing now as it was then. Now, let me have a moment of transeranccy here and admit I was not always about this life. There was a time where I would cringe at the thought of entering a thrift store. The smell, the old people, the thought of all the used good….ick!! But as time passed I grew up and learn to appreciate what thrifting had to offer. Here are a few things that I learned that helped me weed out the good from the bad.
The Busier The Better
No one likes shopping in a jam packed store but there is a positive light to the crowd. The chances are if there are a lot of people in the store on any given day than the store has good things that everyone wants. People are picky about their thrift stores and once you find a good one you stick to it!
Location Matters
Don’t just assume every store is a good store or just because it’s a big store it has good quality things. Trust me I would take quality over quantity any day! The things you will find in a thrift store will reflect the area you live in. I mean the people living around you are the ones giving there things away. Chances are if you don’t like what the people around you have you won’t like what the thrift store has to offer. In my area I like to go to thrift shops in suburban areas because it’s a good variety of things that have good quality.
Don’t Fear a Project!!
I really like DIY and this may not be everyone’s thing so feel free to skip over this part. But, if you don’t fear to get a little crafty than this is definitely your thing. At the thrift store you can find so many cool projects that you can upgrade weather that be clothes furniture or any kind of knick knack. You can get cute saucers and create a tiered cupcake tower, get a slightly distressed shelf and bring it back to life, even add a little flair to an almost amazing piece of clothing.
A Few of My Finds…
This is a deep purple knee length dress, it is a light material that can be dressed up or down with beautiful neckline detailing. I like this dress well because it’s cute and then it meets all my personal modesty guidelines; it falls at a good length, has a higher neckline, although it is sleeveless it is still full coverage (as a t shirt would provide) with or without a jacket. (Price $12)
This electric blue pleated skirt is so cute! It has very light material, perfect length (about knee length), with an elastic waistband for comfort. This skirt is the perfect pop of color for summer and spring time I am excited to have it. I do plan to tweak it just a little bit; it isn’t too big but it doesn’t fit as snug as I like it’s just a tad bit “loose” so I am going to sew in a small elastic piece to gather the waist just a little more. This will give me the fit I want and allow me to still fit it if I grow a little!! (Price $3)
This extra cute printed skirt is in such a unique shade of red, I love it! It is a high-waisted pencil skirt with a small split in the back. It is such a comfy material; I have dressed it down with a loose fitting graphic t shirt but know that you could dress it up just as easy. (Price $6)
